Before you check out the most popular “Australia Day” hashtags for Instagram, let me make use of my rights to voice my personal opinion about Australia Day.
The Australia Day debate on whether to name it differently or change the date may just be a distraction to keep the general public away from what the actual progress should be.
Although it is true that Australia is not the only invaded country in the world, it is also true that â along with Fiji and Botswana â Australia is the only Commonwealth nation in the world yet to sign a treaty with its First Nations peoples.
One of the massive opportunities and rights we have – as Australians – is to sign a sovereignty treaty
A treaty that offers self-determination and sovereignty to different ethnicities found in Australia must be signed.
Forget the Government’s “Voice to Parliament” proposal and the referendum.
Australian indigenous people already have a voice.
Aboriginal Australians donât want to continue being asked to assimilate a constitution written by white people.
What indigenous Australians want and deserve is a sovereignty treaty.

THE TOP 25 AUSTRALIA DAY HASHTAGS ON INSTAGRAM FOR JANUARY 2025
The 26th of January 1788 was the date Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack (British flag symbol) at Warrane, claiming British sovereignty. Some still believe it marks the arrival of James Cook in 1770, which in reality happened in April.
January 26 is symbolic of the shameful and systemic oppression, racism and exclusion that First Nations people in Australia still face. The colonial project all Australians have been benefiting from is built on blood and âAustraliaâ does not deserve a national holiday in any capacity.
So if your brand is making a celebration of âAustralia Dayâ on January 26, some of your customers may feel it is insulting as it marks the beginning of the widespread oppression, dispossession and genocide of First Nations people.
26th of Jan is a day of mourning.
It always will be.

A writer’s note:
While I was writing this article I was thinking of examples of honouring and showcasing local cultural pride before colonisation.
The obvious one is the popular “National Independence Day” celebrations running around the world. But it also made me think of a few museums that showcase local culture before colonisation.
A few years ago, while I was doing a “round the world” trip, I landed in Mexico City.
I was excited, I was finally going to visit the pyramids of Teotihuacan and the National Museum of Anthropology.
And when I got inside this massive museum, it did not disappoint.
I was in awe of their collection of indigenous art, stories, traditions and culture.
Colombia – for example – has an amazing Gold Museum in BogotĂĄ showcasing some of the most exceptional art pieces made with gold by local people before the Spanish “conquistadores” came to steal all the gold.
The Kluge-RuheArt Museum – the only museum outside Australia dedicated solely to Indigenous Australian art – in the U.S.A. is more proud of showcasing Australian Indigenous Art than some museums in Australia. For example, The Art Gallery of NSW (in Sydney), keeps their Indigenous collection in the basement, kind of not wanting to show it.
You could argue that Aussies now have the Berndt Museum of Anthropology, housed at the University of Western Australia as the only museum dedicated to Australian Indigenous art in Australia.
I found it quite disappointing that on the 26th of January 2022, the National Museum of Australia did not mention anything about the invasion and genocide by British troops in Australia.Â
I feel there is nothing more “Australian” than the people who lived in Australia before colonisation with all the rich culture they had: their way of living, food, customs, games, art and traditions.
Everything else after the invasion came from overseas, including that first Australian constitution, which the British wrote to benefit their interests and destroyed the interests and rights of the people who have been caring for this precious land called Australia for thousands of years.

When did Australia Day become a Public Holiday?
The 26th of January was made a public holiday in New South Wales in 1836, and Victoria adopted it as a public holiday in 1931.
