WHO DESIGNED THE LATEST STAR WARS LOGO?
Susan “Suzy” Elizabeth Rice is a screenwriter, author of fiction, painter and designer. Suzy Rice was the designer of the Star Wars films logo in 1977.
Susy’s logo design was not the original Star Wars logo.
ABOUT THE NEW STAR WARS LOGO
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, logo designer, Suzy Rice mentioned how she decided on the font after George Lucas told her he wanted something that is very fascist, intimidating, eye-catching and hard to forget.
The night before, she’d been reading a book on German-type design, which is where she got her font idea from.
Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, in an effort to establish control through conformity, decreed that all signs put up by the Nazi Party would have the same font.
That particular font isn’t known, but it’s believed that it influenced the popular typeface Helvetica. Rice, as she explained in a 2001 essay posted on her website, used the Helvetica offshoot Helvetica Black for the logo.
The newest Star Wars logo features an fresh design that expresses a simple, minimalist and sophisticated design aesthetic without unnecessary embellishments or effects. This straightforwardness in logo design ensures that the new Star Wars logo stands out clearly in any setting, whether on merchandise, digital media, or film marketing materials.
- Classic Sci-Fi Aesthetic: The angular, blocky design of the most recent Star Wars logo feels reminiscent of 1970s and 1980s sci-fi aesthetics, aligning well with the futuristic themes of the Star Wars universe. Despite its origins decades ago, the logo remains modern and relevant, which is a testament to its timeless design.
- Typography: The latest Star Wars logo maintains its iconic block-letter typography, which has remained largely unchanged since its debut in 1977. The typeface is bold, thick, and geometric, creating a strong, futuristic, and instantly recognizable visual identity. The interlocking letters, especially the distinctive connection between the “S” and “T” in “Star” and “W” and “A” in “Wars,” give the logo a sense of unity and balance.
- Colour palette: The current official Star Wars logo is typically presented in a simple black-and-white colour scheme, which gives it versatility across different media. This minimalist palette allows the logo to work seamlessly against a wide range of backgrounds while reinforcing the timelessness and universality of the Star Wars brand.
- Iconography: the new Puma logo goes with “jumping puma” symbol, representing the brand’s strength and power associated with sport athletes.
- Logo versatility and brand consistency: While the new official Star Wars logo is adaptable, often used with different color variations or subtly altered for specific films or events (such as adding glow effects or starscapes), the core design stays consistent. This consistency ensures a strong brand identity across films, TV series, merchandise, and promotional materials.
WHO DESIGNED THE FIRST “ORIGINAL” STAR WARS LOGO
The first Star Wars logo was designed by Ralph McQuarrie in 1976. The original Star Wars logo featured a black inscription against a white background. The Star Wars font was a sans-serif font with even lines, with some inclined to the middle. The logo looked modern and elegant, though too elegant and soft for the series’s mood and plot.
