In 2000, Australian comedian Chris Franklin had the biggest hit in Australia with ‘Bloke’, a song parody of Meredith Brooks’ classic feminist siren call ‘Bitch’, which took you into the life of the song’s bloke.

Bloke was a forgettable parody song about Aussie bogan cliches that accidentally broke through. It was also a strong candidate if Australians ever decide to replace their national anthem.

The song hit the ARIA chart number one, selling more than 120,000 copies. The song ended up being the third biggest single released by an Australian that year and put a platinum record on Franklin’s wall.

The idea was actually that of another comedian, Pommy Johnson,” Franklin confirmed. “He and I wrote songs and he said: “I’ve got this idea for a song. I either want to do ‘Bitchand do it about Pauline Hanson, or do the male response to the ‘Bitch’ song and call it ‘Bloke’.”

23. Kevin Bloody Wilson

Kevin Bloody Wilson (real name: Dennis Bryant) is an Australian musical comedian who performs comical songs with his heavy Australian accent and often includes dirty adult themes. Kevin won one ARIA Music Award.

Kevin Bloody Wilson’s story is now one of legend.

Always a larrikin, he originally wrote and recorded songs on a homemade cassette tape for his mates, simply songs penned about his experiences living in the Outback and working nights as a part time musician and an electrician by day in the gold mines in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Sales of this initial cassette skyrocketed to the tens of thousands before it was transferred to vinyl, where it proceeded to sell tens of thousands more.

It was just the start of a career that Kev admits he never saw coming, and he has never looked back.

Fast forward almost four decades and Kevin is a household name throughout Australia and England.

It is almost 40 years ago that he was getting arrested for performing his politically incorrect songs in public.

Times have changed though, and Kev even now proudly sports a nomination for Australian Of The Year as one of the country’s most prolific comedian, songwriter and performers.

While his songs and concert performances continue to rattle the cages of the PC Brigade, Kevin Bloody Wilson has earned his place in the entertainment industry with almost zero mainstream media support.

Wilson record sales are now nudging the four million mark.

All of his CDs and DVDs have achieved gold status globally, with many reaching platinum status. In fact, one album, Kev’s Back, reached quadruple platinum status.

Kev’s recordings can be found all over the world and his music has also been preserved for generations to come in the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra.

Wilson fan base stretches from Broken Hill to Buckingham Palace and his sold-out live concerts and music sales are the envy of most Rock Artist, all while maintaining a Global touring schedule that consistently earn legions of new fans who not only love his music but love the Kevin Bloody Wilson “Dilligaf” (Do I look like a give a fak) attitude… so much so that Kevin’s song: Dilligaf has been used in 10+ thousand videos on TikTok.

Tip: Aussie marketers who want to create funny or humourus brand associations will find this list useful. A good practice when putting together the best social media brief when hiring a new marketing agency; will be to ask the new agency to present the top comedians or comics who may be relevant to be associated with your brand.
