About the new NASA logo
The new NASA logo is fondly known as “the meatball” and looking about as tasty as one that rolled behind a General Electric fridge in 1962.
The latest NASA logo circular emblem appears to be what happens when a government team with zero graphic design skills gets together and says: “Let’s make something that yells ‘SPACE!’ to people who’ve never seen Star Trek.”
The current NASA logo features a blue circle – because apparently nothing says “infinite universe” like a blue circle because supposedly the universe is blue, not black.
Inside this azure dinner plate is a constellation of stars that looks suspiciously like dandruff on a blue t-shirt.
These stars are arranged with all the precision of a toddler placing stickers after a sugar high of 12 Hersheyâs.
Slicing through this celestial calamity is a red chevron â or as NASA scientists call it: “the red thing that goes swoosh”.
This air crafty tongue sticks out through the entire NASA logo like it’s mocking the laws of physics NASA supposedly upholds.
Those odd red tweezers for eyebrows are the graphic equivalent of saying “Neeener-neeener” to gravity.
The weird orbital ring added to the official NASA logo looks like Saturn’s hula hoop. It circles around the blue background in white, apparently representing… something scientific?
Maybe the ring is tracking the career trajectory of astronauts who appear on Dancing with the Stars performing an embarrassing cha-cha-cha.
And if it was not enough, then there’s the agency name – “NASA” – plastered across the middle in a font that shouts:
“We stopped updating our brand guidelines when got busy following the Judith Exner-John F Kennedy affair!”
The NASA logoâs typography has all the modern appeal of a Sony TR-63 pocket radio.
The newest NASA logo is not that new, new, new and has remained virtually unchanged since 1959, proving that while NASA engineers can launch telescopes that peer into the dawn of time and Mars rovers, they absolutely cannot be bothered to update their logo beyond what could have been designed by a 5 y.o. kid with delayed motor skills using Microsoft Paint.
Surely, the newest NASA logo helps the American government organisation to be recognisable for their lack of design skills.
The meaning of the newest NASA logo
- The red vector represents aeronautics.
- The stars represent space.
- The orbit represents space travel.
- The sphere represents a planet.
The NASA Insignia (commonly referred to as the âMeatballâ) reflects the history and tradition of the agency.
Who designed the latest NASA logo?
The NASA logo was designed by then NASA employee James Modarelli
NASA logo history
The logo designed by James Modarelli was adopted for use in 1959. Then the NASA logo was retired between 1976-1992.
In 1992, the NASA logo was reinstated and is presently NASAâs official symbol.
NASA logo usage
The latest NASA logo is included on all agency publications, displays, visual communications and markings.

Conclusion
The new NASA’s “meatball” logo is the perfect representation of American space exploration: outdated, confusing, oddly patriotic with its red, white, and blue colour scheme, and somehow still commanding popularity despite looking like it was the runner-up in a primary school design contest.
But hey, when you can land people on the moon, you can get away with a crappy logo that looks like a rejected cosmic Tonikaku Kawaii neon sign intended for a Manga store located in Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan.
